I realized I didn't like many of the quotes from this episode. As dialogue back and forth their were some good ones, but none that really worked on their own.

Like personally, I always enjoyed Sayid's response when Sawyer told him that he thought he was lying, and that he had never tortured anyone in his life. But does "Unfortunately for both of us, you are wrong." make sense on it's own?

If you like some that I missed, let me know and I will add it :daezy:

Some interesting tidbits I found while looking for quotes:

* When Charlie makes a deal with Claire that he can find her peanut butter, her necklace changes position throughout the scene.

* The blood on Sayid's shirt disappears then reappears after he stabs Sawyer.

* The leaves Michael hands Sun are not eucalyptus.

Numbers:

* Sawyer tried to con Jessica & David for $160.000.

* Kate says the incident with Sawyer's parents happened when he was around 8 years old.

* Boone says he had 4 refills for Shannon's asthma medicine.

Although I'd still vote for "tied to a tree on an Island of mystery" (because it sums up the WHOLE show), that Sayid quote is good too.

The most interesting thing about Confidence Man is how much I disliked Sawyer back then really, but how much I like him even then... now. Does that make sense?

It's like I can see the Sawyer I ended up really loving, all the way back then, it's just we didn't quite have the context of how much of a softie he was to put that first impression into. It's stillt he same Sawyer, it's just the way I see him thats different.

I actually preferred early sawyer. :shrug: Season 5 ruined him for me, and I was hoping he would bounce back Season 6 but I was sadly disappointed.

I LOVE S2-S3 Sawyer, but when you say "early Sawyer", do you really mean like *this* Sawyer, in early S1 ? Because I think the Sawyer I eventually picked as my favorite LOST character, really only is starting to develop as of probably this episode, and then going forward.

No, a lot of the characters season 1 were still developing their act. I guess early Sawyer would be mid season 1 - season 4 (maybe even early season 4. I'll let you know when we get there)

Season 2-4 sawyer was best for me too. I wouldn't say season 5-6 sawyer runied him for me, but Juliet did. I would have to count the Juliet/Sawyer relationship as the single most unbelievable thing on the show, and that includes smoke monsters, islands that move, and time travel.

EPISODE 1.09 - Solitary
Image

Centricity = Sayid

Feeling guilt and remorse for his actions, Sayid exiled himself from the camp. He finds a wire on the beach and follows it leading it to a trap set by the mysterious French woman. In flashbacks, we meet the woman Sayid has been carrying a photograph of.

I always loved the first meeting between Sayid and Danielle in this scene. Actually all of their interactions were great. I did not Sayid much, but I am actually finding I enjoy early Sayid much more than I remember.

Solitary is arguably when the show gets over its early stumbling blocks, and actually starts the story that would propel it... well, until halfway into Season 6. The Others ! You could make a huge list of all of the concepts that were first introduced in "Solitary." Alex, Ethan, The Others, the French science team, Rousseau's maps, the Whispers, the Sickness, the Black Rock (well in English anyway), the Looking Glass, "we will meet in the next life if not in this one", etc. Probably MORE *huge* concepts introduced in this one than... ANY other episode other than the Pilot (which shouldn't count).

#1 The reason Sullivan had lines in the beginning of the episode was to distract attention away from Ethan. To give the audience *two* people to suspect as a possible Other.

#2 Michael is coming up with a shower system here... but within 5 or 6 episodes, he's going to have a drastic character shift, and be all like "you're all so comfortable here, trying to make new lives, I want to get my boy off this Island !" So, yeah... minor character development flub here.

#3 Hurley's golf speech is another classic. "running from boars and monsters, freakin' polar bears" "You didn't hear about the polar bear ?" Vote for quote of the episode.

#4 Hurley and Charlie's crazy dance. Wow. So many classic things in this one.

#5 "Are you playing GOLF ?" "Yeah." "Can I play ?" Hah !

#6 I do believe Danielle was *almost* coming on to Sayid when they were talking about the music box.

#7 But of course, Danielle doesn't mention the Korean-speaking guy her team finds. Boy, the show would have been easy to predict if she did, huh ?

#8 That shot of Shannon in her bikini. Woof.

#9 Kate can't believe that a DOCTOR is playing golf. And then Sawyer picks up on that. "What's next, a cop eating a donut ?" We were talking about when "classic Sawyer" starts... it might be that scene.

#10 "You need me, you can't leave !" - Danielle goes from mild flirting to crazy psycho girlfriend in about 4 minutes.

#11 Why is that redshirt at the golf game holding up a suitcase ?

#12 Michael apologizes to Walt and is nice. Yay !

#13 When Danielle is running and then sees Sayid, for just a split second, she looks like Alex. So, yeah, Tania Raymonde was really well cast as Alex.

#14 Danielle tells Sayid to watch his friends closely. Ironically, the only Oceanic passenger who ever got "the sickness" for sure was Sayid.

#15 Also ironic... I don't think the one Scotsman on LOST ever got to play golf.

#16 Sawyer shows up at the golf game. He's one of them ! "I'll take that action" says Kate. Awwww...

#17 And then we go straight to a knife, Locke, and Walt. Duh-duh-nuhhh.... the thing is, Michael WAS just a good dad to Walt. Walt just wasn't interested. He knew his destiny was with Locke.

#18 And then... The Whispers !

As much as I liked "Confidence Man," its place as the #3 best episode (after Pilot and Walkabout) only lasted one episode.

Just watched House of the Rising Sun! :D Definitely gave me more perspective into Sun and Jin, I grew to like Sun a lot early on and that last scene where she comes back to Jin is a big reason why. I still though Jin was a jerk though, didn't like him until later :P I also thought this was one of LOST's weaker endings, tbh I completely forgot about this montage because it was so forgettable, but other than that I think it's a pretty great episode! I thought a lot of people acted very well, (with the exception of Jorge lol, but it was more the writing, those lines were baaaaaad!) especially Evie and Yunjin Kim.
Oh and Locke just gets creepier, doesn't he?
More catching up to do later!

Watched The Moth and Confidence Man! The Moth was the weaker of the two, but I still found it pretty enjoyable. It's probably LOST at it's cheesiest point, "Oh look! There's a moth, trying to break free! It saved us hooray!" haha. These Charlie flashbacks are pretty good tbh, compared to his other ones. It feels like they have no idea what to do with the character of Hurley yet, he's just sort of there lol. And bad bad Locke hitting Sayid :nono:
For Confidence Man, I thought it was great! I hated Sawyer back then, but now that I love him I can appreciate it so much more! :omg: I love how Shannon, the one with asthma, is helping Boone to the caves after he gets beat up :lol: What else... Sawyer's pretty tough and Jack thinks he's tough, Kate enjoyed that kiss way too much, and if I was Claire I would be sooo mad at Charlie for getting my hopes up! :nod:
And your conversation about Sawyer... I grew to love him season 2-4 too but I also loved season 5 and (not as much) 6 Sawyer! I don't care what you guys think, Sawyer and Juliet are awesome! :noble:

I ALSO liked Suliet. :winefriends:

I think the defining event between "classic Sawyer" and "later Sawyer" is The Brig (late S3). Once he killed Cooper, Sawyer was completely changed.

:omg: :high5:
I also thought he changed, and I gained a lot of respect for him in Season (4?) when the camps split up and he was so concerned with protecting Claire. :bearhug: After that he became a different man but I loved both sides to him. I have to admit that season 6 was a bit of a letdown for him though. *sigh* The Sawyer and Juliet remembering scene made up for it though! :sobbing:

I think Sawyer changed after killing Cooper because he had lost his reason for being, in a way. All he had proved was that he could be a killer, and that's not really something to aspire to. Revenge might be a great abstract to keep a person going, but in practice, it doesn't really work.

"Raised by Another" thoughts.

#1 Superstitious doctors less logical than Jack might have diagnosed Claire with "stigmata", what some people claim is a miracle that mimics the nail wounds of Jesus on the Cross: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stigmata

#2 Peeing on a stick... not the only time urine will ever be mentioned on LOST.

#3 Followed by testicular cancer. This episode is full of "down under" subjects.

#4 Saying that Claire's mom has "basically already" disowned her is a strange way to joke about someone being in a coma.

#5 Charlie lays his heart on his sleeve to Claire, and it's met by an awkward silence. Haha.

#6 Claire's friend (the first of a few Rachels) is played by one actress, and her voice is dubbed by a completely different actress.

#7 I had forgotten that Hurley had SO many great speeches in the early series. The speech about Scott and Steve is another classic.

#8 When Kate first met Jack, she said she had sewed her drapes. Here, Claire is putting up... drapes.

#9 I think Claire's boyfriend HAD to have been muscled or something by one of Ben's Others. Or maybe a Widmore person (since Charles has one of this guy's paintings on his wall in S6). Right ?

#10 Locke's "joke" to Hurley sort of mirrors "Who Watches the Watchmen ?" from that book/movie.

#11 The thing after that conversation, where Hurley tells a redshirt he just wants to get away from Locke... that was totally ad-libbed by Jorge Garcia.

#12 Six seasons of LOST, we never did see a skinny little redhead guy with glasses who could be Lance.

#13 Ethan Rom = Other Man. You probably all already know that, but just in case !

#14 I think the "blurry" thing the psychic saw was the Smoke Monster.

#15 It's funny to think that the dangerous person that the psychic is trying to avoid Aaron being raised by is Kate.

#16 "Location: Craphole Island", heh. "Rape Caves", double heh !

#17 Another example of Sawyer easily giving someone what they want when they ask for it. When he has it, that is.

#18 "One sugar plum fairy, two sugar plum fairy..." heh.

#19 In the middle of (what could be) labor is a really bad time to tell your would-be-girlfriend that you're a recovering drug addict.

#20 Wow, Claire was getting paid a LOT for giving up that kid. Especially considering moms often just do it for free.

#21 "Catch a Falling Star", nope, I bet the show never brings up that song again. :P

#22 It's best, I think, if we just presume that the psychic DID know about 815 crashing, and that Claire is right about him. Ignore what is said in "?".

#23 Probably the best cliff hanger thus far ?

The only real problem with "Raised by Another" is that it is an example of an early episode that sets up some things that the writers later decided to give up on: the thing with the psychic and Aaron and all that. Other than that, it's an average S1 episode, which means it's better than some later episodes as well.

I will post my list for ATBCHDI when I actually rewatch it, but I noticed something funny about the TelevisionWithoutPity thread from the original airing on December 8, 2004: http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com ... 21069&st=0 The big thing they talked about most was Charlie's almost death. John Locke finding the hatch, which is you know... one of the biggest events on LOST *ever* is only mentioned here and there as sort of a side issue.

I think the Charlie almost dying is probably mentioned more often because it was emotionally intense. Locke finding the hatch is more important later on. I really do not enjoy a lot of Jack's flashbacks this rewatch makes me realize.

"All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues"

#1 Locke saying "He went after Claire" was ostensibly about Charlie, but he could have meant Ethan too, if he was channelling his Island mojo.

#2 Jack would suck at PVP shooter games. Stealth FTW !

#3 "Sayid said there's others." "Sayid said we're not alone." "Semantics" - Funny exchange !

#4 Boy, these early episodes really made Christian seem like a bad dad.

#5 Walt has the best solution to finding Charlie and Claire (using Vincent's sniffer) and he's completely ignored. Dummies !

#6 "I don't want anything to happen to the only trained physician on The Island. Let me be the hunter, you be the doctor." Locke, speaking logic, and also foreshadowing the "Man of Science, Man of Faith" thing.

#7 "Back home, I'm known as something of a warrior myself." I spent a few seasons trying to get someone in the know to address this line (sending messages to Darleton, mostly), and we never did get a follow up on what Hurley meant, after six full seasons. A warrior in Warcraft, Dungeons & Dragons, maybe ?

#8 Dominic Monaghan's dropped tape rings was totally a LOTR reference.

#9 "You're just full of surprises." ATBCHDI is not an episode you think of when you think of great dialogue, but really... it's got a lot of little gems.

#10 We really didn't get enough Walt-Sawyer interactions. "It's stupid to lie about your name." Walt is the fount of wisdom in this episode ! "And why am I getting the evening news from a six year old."

#11 The redshirt discussion... John Locke didn't watch Star Trek ? Hard to believe.

#12 If Jack didn't mention alcohol in his report, they'd be all like... how'd you clean the surgical area ? :P

#13 Sayid and Sawyer, sharing information. On this Island ? Crazy !

#14 To paraphrase an old saying, Jack was beating a dead ho...bbit.

#15 While everyone's distracted by Charlie almost dying, and Claire being abducted in general... Locke discovers THE HATCH. You know, the thing that basically set up season 2, and by extension, the DHARMA Initiative. Just a little thing like that !

This is one of the better early S1 episodes, but I think really sticks out for me when I dissect it. Without these bullet points, I probably wouldn't rate it as high as it deserves.

So, with the next episode, we get to the end of "early S1", and one of the most "meh" episodes of S1. I haven't rewatched it yet, but from memory, I would say "Whatever the Case May Be" is arguably an infomercial for...

* Finding Nemo
* Haliburton briefcases
* Online banking
* Victoria's Secret
* All of the Above
