Well, I've heard some misgivings about the weekend but no one has said they cannot make the Wednesday draft date, so I'm going to lock that in. I put the draft time to 8pm EST to try to fit both coastal time zones, Hopefully that works for everyone!

I PMed this response to Timmer, re: Playoff schedule...

MR F wrote:
I like option 3

6 teams, 2 teams get a bye week 1 of playoffs. Did I not do that last year?

Anyway, if that's not an option, I guess the option with 8 teams in the playoffs...which is a bit overkill, I suppose, but only having 4 teams seems too little.

Either way, I don't see my autodraft team making it so whatever's clever.

Typically in leagues I'm in, two teams get a bye week, as sort of a "congrats for having an awesome season, here is your reward", but maybe I didn't do that last year, I forget.

Whatever ya all want to do, though, cool with me.

My friend Mr F is correct about our league last year. We had six teams make the playoffs. The top two teams got a bye week while teams three through six played each other to determine who would be playing teams number one and two in the semi-finals.

Before I give my reasons for wanting to keep the settings that our commissioner Timmer set up originally, I would like to point out that I have set up a simple poll here in this thread for us to vote while we discuss. We can easily move the discussion to our league message board on ESPN's website.

Now I will also copy Timmer's PM that we all received.

Timmer wrote:
When I set the league up this year, I used the default playoff settings that ESPN had, which is that 4 teams out of 10 make the playoffs and there are two two-week playoff matchups. These are weeks 14-17. ESPN uses a two-week period for playoff matchups to help reduce the number of possible stud it-downs in the final weeks.

Anyway, JC has pointed out that last year the RM league had a different setup which involved more like 8 teams to make the playoffs, and each matchup was one week, and she is interested to see if we can return to that setup.

On one hand, i can understand the desire to stick with the same setup as last year, but on the other, changing league rules after the season has started is generally taboo.

So that said, to change the playoffs to an 8-team format, I'll need a majority of teams to vote YES on this. I'll abstain as the commish. So with 9 teams voting, we need five "yes" votes to change the playoff settings to include 8 teams instead of 4.

If you want to discuss this, the best place is probably the league msg board at espn, so that we don't all get a ton of emails back and forth, and we don't all have to keep adding ten names to every pm.

You can send me your vote thru a PM here or on the msg board there, whichever.

Thanks!

First, I agree completely with Timmer's assessment that changing rules like this after the season has started is taboo. We had a long time to discuss and make any changes to the rules before the season started. To make changes now seems wrong. It's like starting a 100 yard foot race, and after the starting gun someone yelling out, "Hey, instead of one winner of this race let's have two....or three, whadaya say?"

Second, I think four teams making the playoffs is a better outcome for our long regular season. Having eight teams make the playoffs in a ten team league is just absurd in my personal opinion. I believe that the regular season is a very important part of fantasy football. The regular season is a competition just as much as the playoffs. It is a competition to finish in the top four. A competition to finish in the top eight is no competition at all. It is just a broad reminder of, "Hey, just don't finish ninth or tenth and you'll be fine."

Third, having six teams make the playoffs is still too watered down in my opinion and it adds in the twist of bye weeks which I also oppose. Six playoff teams is certainly better than eight, but it is still over half the league making the playoffs. Then, there is the bye week. I actually think having a bye week for the top two teams unfairly penalizes those very top two teams. Think about the last four weeks of an NFL season. Requiring the top two teams to sit hurts them because they are missing out on some of their players producing at high levels in a still high stakes game. Top players on top teams often get rest time and don't produce at high levels in weeks sixteen and seventeen. So, sitting all a teams players during a still very active competitive week fourteen is unfair because teams three through six are getting to play and win. If we have a four team playoff, all four teams play at the same time. Teams one and four battle it out in weeks fourteen and fifteen as do teams two and three. Then the winners of those two match ups go into the sometimes garbage time of weeks sixteen and seventeen on a level playing field to decide our champion.

So, in closing I would like to just re-enforce the idea that fantasy football is a season long competition stretching from week one to week seventeen. Having four playoff teams as opposed to six or eight more accurately portrays that spirit of season long competition. If more people disagree with my argument than agree with it, I am of course fine with the majority's decision.

Are you ready for some (fantasy) football!!??!!??

My biggest problem with the current format is that matchups are two weeks long. I think it should be one week, win or lose, and then move on to the next matchup. Six or eight teams fits that better than four.

Just wanted to point out, if we're trying to be like NFL, 37% (or so) of teams make the playoffs. If we were to go four teams in our league, then 40% would make playoffs, which is very close to the NFL percentage.

That being said, I still believe 6 is the way to go.

re: taboo changing rules

Technically, this is the RMFL's second year, and since we had this playoff system last year, I wouldn't say we're changing rules so much as changing it back to the way it was.

re: Bye weeks

I don't think bye weeks punishes those who get them, they are essentially getting a free win, and a nice week off to just relax and watch some football.

As for the week 16 and 17 games, in which some teams who are definitely making the playoffs rest their players, well them's the luck of the draw. Typically, I don't know if we did this last year, the leagues I'm in run week 1 - 13 regular season, playoffs week 14 - 16. Even though week 16, it's possible some players will rest if they are on a great team already making the playoffs, most teams still play their players on week 16. IMO, having the championship game in week 16 as opposed to week 17 is much better, as Rey said, many teams rest their players in those later weeks (but way more in week 17, I'd say)

I also completely agree with DH that two week matches seems too much.

And it also seems to me, that if only four teams make the playoffs, it's quite possible those four slots could be taken up rather quickly, leaving the rest of the league to play meaningless season games for possibly, the last 2, 3, 4 games of the season.

All that being said, I'm going to vote for 6, however, if we can't have 6...I think Rey has convinced me that 4 is better then 8.

Derp a derp.

I agree with the things Mr. F says. I too saw the 6 team playoff system as something that was part of our league rules and with this being the second year of the league it should have just carried through to this year. Thus, when I brought this up with Timmer after DH found the rule difference I thought it was just correcting an error. Anyway, I like the 6 team system for a reason that is pretty simple - I like the fact that more teams get to participate. As I said though I agree with Mr F's points.

I will vote 6 teams but if most people want a 4 team playoff I will be fine with that.

Btw Timmer, I'd rather you have a say in this, as well. You're our league commish, dude! If there is a tie with votes, I would just say the tie breaker is whatever commish decides.

I'm sorry but this is just like pleading ignorance in court. It's like getting arrested for something and going to court and telling the judge, "I didn't know what I did was against the law, your honor." This is just totally wrong to change a rule/setting after competition has begun. I'm sorry that you guys didnt look over the league settings in the preseason. I read them. It wasn't like things were being withheld until now. There was so much time to talk about changing rules before this week. In fact, we talked about rule changes. There was discussion during the preseason. People certainly looked into specific rules to ensure that things were to everyone's liking (PPR for one). It is just not right to change a major league rule/setting after the season has started.

And as much as I love my boy Mr F, he set all the rules/settings last year...one person. When did we decide that his settings (which were not just standard/normal settings btw) were to be the RM fantasy football official settings and that any changes to this must be made by league vote? The fact that people were discussing rules and the like before this season without ever bringing up that we must stay true to Mr F's blueprint from last year only strengthens what I'm saying. Timmer came in to be our commissioner this season. No one told him that he MUST keep last year's settings. He set up what is basically standard ESPN rules and settings for our league with an exception for PPR. Everyone knew that Timmer's settings were not identical to what we had last year. Only a week or so before this season started I was a part of a discussion about how our defense/special teams settings were different from last year. There wasnt a big uproar about it. So, everyone knew the settings weren't identical. The time for changing Timmer's settings was the preseason. That time is over.

We are in the regular season. It is just plain wrong to be changing settings now.

Well, I'm cool with Timmer's settings. Rey seems to feel pretty strongly about not changing, and I don't want to get into a tiff about this haha, I love Rey too much I don't want to fight. :(

I say next year preseason, we all get together in the thread and discuss what rules and regulations should be, it will be then that I fight for 6 man playoffs! :nicenod:

Changing my vote to 4

Edit - 4 is also a Lost number, what could go wrong?

I felt very odd about editing a post, btw, even though this isn't Mafia. Just doesn't seem right.

Yeah, I'm not up for someone trying to tell me what I knew or didn't know and at what time I knew it. I'm not defending myself in a fantasy football thread. I vote 4.
