Reading belongs here, 'course. What are some of your favourite books, and what are you currently reading?

I love to read! :bookhouse: I'm currently reading Faith of the Fallen which is the 6th book in the Sword of Truth series. I started reading the series after playing rabbit's Sword of Truth mafia game on TP. And of course LT and I have talked about the series a ton. I'm absolutely hooked. One of my favorite reads ever.

Let's see...some of my favorite books of all time are:
The Harry Potter Series
The His Dark Materials Trilogy
Pride and Prejudice
Any books by Bill Bryson (I especially love A Walk in the Woods)
World War Z by Max Brooks
The Chronicles of Narnia (my favorite among those is A Horse and His Boy)
Goodnight, Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

There are about a gazillion other books I love, but those are probably my top ones. And can I say that picture is epic and, if I could, I would live in a library.

I found that picture on stumbleupon.com. :politegiggle:

I'm a nerd and a genuine book-lover because I'll read almost anything you put in front of me, including children's books.

Some of my favourite books are by Ted Dekker. Showdown, Saint, Sinner, When Heaven Weeps, etc. He's a great writer. I used to read works by Jodi Picoult too.

I love to read!!! I am currently reading Game of Thrones (book 1) which is turning out to be as epic as Sword of Truth was.

I think I probably have approximately 1000 books or so in my library (not including technical books).

If I include children's books in my list of all time favorites, then I must add:
Where's Waldo? (and all of the subsequent Where's Waldo books)
Where the Wild Things Are (I am somewhat obsessed with this one)
The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar

There are about a million more books I could list. :D

Oh wow, i just saw this thread. New Home :D

I still have Frog & Toad are Friends, and all my childhood Dr Suess books. I still read them occasionally, too. I am a rereader, i find something new whenever I read a book, or look at it in new ways. I have hundreds of books, plus I got a Kindle for Christmas. It isn't the same, i love the tactile presence of a book, but it is great to try something out (like a series) so now i only buy keeper books in hardcover.

I like history, sci-fi, some fantasy, and Biography. I just finished book Two of SOT, and am taking a break from it with King Leopolds Ghost, a book about the extreme exploitation of the Congo.

I love Kipling, Dickens, Tolkien (although I am yet to make it all the way through the Silmarillion). For Sci Fi, I am a big Ringworld fan, Dune, Niven & Pournelle.

I'm a big rereader too, S~V~S. :) It drives my family crazy how often I'll reread a book I've already read--but it makes me happy, so I say :P to the naysayers.

I have worn out two LOTR trilogies in my lifetime rereading, and three copies of Dune. I am on my second Nicholas & Alexandra, also my second Mary Queen of Scots~

I have never read bestseller books much, but was thinking of doing some light reading this summer. Any suggestions?

Oh, I forgot to mention another series I am addicted to: The Amelia Peabody Mysteries by Elizabeth Peters. The books are set in turn of the century (late 1800's-early 1900's) England/Egypt. They are mystery novels, but they are a mixture of romance, drama, comedy, adventure. The heroine is basically a female Indiana Jones. The books are so much fun and really easy reads if you're looking for something entertaining. Plus, if you love ancient Egypt, like I do, the archaeology in the books is outstanding as the author is an egyptologist. :sunny:

I like the Harry Potter series too. Mainly because it was made into puppets~

Same! (reading book 1 that is). I was going to buy all 4, but the store didn't have the second one, so I just picked up the first of that, and some of The Dark Tower series. Also read the first 3 of the HP books for like the 5th time over the last few days.

Also@SVS. Do you not like Silmarillion? Personally, I thought both it and Unfinished Tales were nowhere near as good, I've read the trilogy and hobbit a bunch of times, but I've only managed the other 2 once.

I like the Silmarillion, but it is almost more like a reference volume in some ways than a flowing story line, if you know what I mean, or perhaps like the Religious text for the LOTR universe. It is amazing that that whole mythos came from one mind.

I'm just up to book five of the dark tower series boo.

It's been totally worth the read so far, even though it literally takes me forever to get through such massive books.

I was recommending it to Heiots, not sure if she will like it or not but I think it's worth it to give it a shot. After two books you ought to know if it's for you, but book 3 is for me where I really got hooked. There's something about it. There are plenty of bits in there that I don't like but so much I completely love too.

Ya... it's King, so I'm fully expecting the end to be awful (I've heard the last few get really stupid), but other then Tommyknockers, I haven't read anything he's written anything where the entire story was meh, so I'm thinking they should be good.

Also, just finished GoT. Wow. I wasn't expecting all the 'resolutions' (I think you could call them that), in the last like... 200 pages. Looking forward to seeing a lot of it play out on the show, hopefully it continues to be as good as it has been so far, although I would like to see more of the wolves, and in the 1 in 1 combat, have them practice it a bit more so it doesn't look like something children could do just as well. The Mountain and The Dog in the latest episode just really stuck out as poorly done to me.

Oh, this is such a great thread!!!

Im kind of a book nerd and i studied literature in college, so, books are my best friends :p

I currently just finished reading "The catcher in the rye" by Sallinger (awesome!!! :winefriends: love Holden Caulfield and im already copying some of his expressions, eventhough he is a teenager and im not, if you want to know the truth :p ). I read it in english, too :pinch:
And now im about to start "Hucklberry Finn" by Mark Twain, and "Maldición eterna a quien lea estas páginas" ("eternal curse of the reader of these pages" in english) by an argentinian prestigious author that i really like, Manuel Puig (who also wrote "Kiss of a Spiderwoman" that was made into a movie in the 80s starring Willian Hurt that won an Oscar for it) and some short stories of my fave authors. I like to read several books at the same time, lol :p .

Each of us is the sum of his experiences, not in the Freudian sense that we are victims of them, but in the sense that we reply on our experiences as the primary source of our wisdom, unless we are delusional and live by an ideology that refutes reality. At decision points in life, a sane person is guided by the lessons of his past. - Dean Koontz (Relentless)

His books are definitely worth a read.

Four days for the entire series? Wow...are you some kind of speed reader? Did you just read for 96 straight hours?

It took me about a month to read the entire series...Of course there were a few days here and there where I didn't do any reading or was busy and not able to read a lot.

I'm an unwilling speed reader. I've been a bookworm for as long as I can remember. Since 4, I think. My teachers have complained about my reading during lessons behind textbooks. Somewhere along the way, I picked up speed reading. I don't know how it happened. My only complain it that I go through books like water, and that's a very expensive habit.

I did have 4 days to myself. Well, besides practise and making my meals and all that jazz.

I can totally pull off reading all the Harry Potter books in 4 days and I think I've done that at least once. I've read the books so many times that my parents and husband make fun of me now for not trying something new. :politegiggle:

However, I just read The Hunger Games all in one day. I bought it this morning and finished it this evening and then went out and bought the other two books in the series. I highly recommend it!!!!! :nicenod:

There are some books that I will never tire of, but there are some which I never wish to touch again. Mostly fanfiction.

Since I'm taking Foundations of Western Culture in July, I have some intense reading to do.

A Brief History of Western Civilization - Jackson Spielvogel.
Beowulf (Translation by S. Heaney)
Inferno - Dante Alighieri (Translation by R. Pinsky)
The Canterbury Tales - Geoffrey Chaucer (Translation by Nevill Coghill)
Everyman (play in the 16th century)

The last four look terribly depressing. I'm finishing up Everyman. The cover is certainly attention-grabbing but it fits. If anyone has ever read those books, let me know. We can do some discussion. :D

I've read both Dante's Inferno and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. I enjoyed the latter, especially the Prologue, but read it a long time ago when I was a senior in high school.

Nevermind. It appears I have gotten books for a different class. :meh: Now we're doing Aenid, Gilgamesh, Trial & Death of Socrates, Three Theban Plays, and Odyssey.

Thankfully, the bookstore allows returns within 48 hours.

It's really thick, and it's not prose. I'm hoping it's interesting and that I can finish it within the week!
