Once Upon a Time Exclusive: Emilie de Ravin Promoted to Series Regular for Season 2

Matt Webb Mitovich
We couldn’t have conjured up better Once Upon a Time news if you furnished us with a magical well and a flask of Windex and/or love potion: Emilie de Ravin has been upgraded to series regular status for Season 2.

The Lost alum’s future with the fantastical ABC drama seemed solid given the events of the Season 1 finale, in which Belle was sprung from Storybrooke captivity to reunite with onetime flame Rumpelstiltskin and make him aware of Regina/the Evil Queen’s duplicitous act. Still, it’s nice to see it made official with the actress’ inking of a deal.

As Once scribe Jane Espenson recently explained to us, “We cast [Emilie] thinking that she’d be great for this but that it would probably be a one-shot — but if she didn’t get a pilot and she had a good time and she’s available, we knew that of course she’d be welcome back!”

De Ravin, whose ABC pilot Americana did not get picked up for the fall, appeared in a total of three Once Upon a Time episodes during the show’s freshman run.

YAY.

I have to admit, I'm a little hmm about what they're going to do next season. Magic battles in the middle of the streets? xD

Samantha: I'll take anything you've got on Once Upon a Time!
Princess Aurora comes in a package deal! The ABC hit series is currently looking for a Prince Phillip to go hand-in-hand with Aurora and he kind of reminds us of Charming: He is known to selflessly shoulder the burden for those around him and is a skilled warrior. Oh, and he's very handsome. Duh-doy!
_serenachan: any news on the Mad Hatter from Once Upon a Time?
Showrunner Edward Kitsis was pretty tight-lipped about season two, but did say fans will "absolutely" see Sebastian Stan in season two, so Jefferson/Mad Hatter's story is far from over. Small victories, people!

Can't wait for Once Upon a Time to return. What's coming up? —Alan
NATALIE: Next season is all about redemption — especially considering people have done some pretty messed-up things in fairy tale land they'll now remember in Storybrooke. "Archie, for example, who is Jiminy Cricket, is a conscience, but for 28 years, he's forgotten the fact that he turned Gepetto's parents into puppets," executive producer Edward Kitsis says. "Those puppets are hanging in Mr. Gold's shop, so what happens when you're confronted with your past now? There's a lot of loss, regret and redemption for these characters to find."

Will Once Upon a Time Travel to the Land of Oz?

Judy Garland; Ginnifer Goodwin
Once Upon a Time has taken viewers to fairy tale land and Wonderland — and apparently, they'll even venture to Neverland next season. But what about the Land of Oz? It turns out that producers have hinted at a possible trip to The Wizard of Oz locale since the beginning.

Regina's shocking origin story, Storybrooke's future and more Once Upon a Time scoop

"What's interesting is if you go back and look at the pilot, there's a page of flying monkeys in Henry's book," executive producer Edward Kitsis says. "If I would go back and re-watch it — or buy the DVD coming out in August — and you pause on the book, you might see it."

The scene in question is when Emma crashes her car and the book goes flying. "The book flips through a number of pages. There are glimpses of images, one of which are the flying monkeys from Oz," executive producer Adam Horowitz adds. (Kitsis also notes that another blink-and-you'll-miss-it image from the pilot was that of the hookah-smoking Caterpillar, which was voiced by Roger Daltrey in the Alice in Wonderland-themed episode, "Hat Trick.")

That same episode featured the Mad Hatter (Sebastian Stan) taking the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) through a portal into a room full of doors, one of which leads to Wonderland. "There are many different doors and I might've seen a green curtain," Kitsis says coyly, referring to the Wizard of Oz (played by Frank Morgan in the 1939 film) hiding behind a green curtain to mask his true identity. (Check out screen grab of the Oz symbol on the curtain here.)

"As we said in the episode with Wonderland, the Mad Hatter talks about all these worlds," Horowitz adds. "We're very excited about the possibilities for where we could show."

There are no current plans to venture to Oz in Season 2, but the producers are leaving the door open, an ABC rep said.
